TOWARDS NAEMT ACCREDITATION

September 18, 2024 | 11:38 am

NAEMT’s Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care. The mission of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care. PHTLS is developed by NAEMT in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. The Committee provides the medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program.

PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care.

KCEMT is in the final stages of getting accreditation to run NAEMT Courses with support from Malteser International. NAEMT accreditation enhances the quality, consistency, and global recognition of EMS training programs, leading to better-prepared EMTs and paramedics and ultimately improving patient care.

Obtaining National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) accreditation is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Global Recognition and Credibility: NAEMT is recognised worldwide as a leading authority in emergency medical education. Accreditation provides institutions and programs with international credibility, enhancing the reputation of both the training provider and its graduates.
  2. Standardisation of Training: NAEMT ensures that emergency medical training meets consistent, high standards, regardless of the location. This standardisation guarantees that EMTs and paramedics have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care across different regions.
  3. Improved Career Opportunities: NAEMT-accredited programs are valued by employers globally. Graduates of these programs often have a competitive edge when seeking employment because their credentials reflect a recognised standard of training and competency.
  4. Enhanced Patient Care: With NAEMT accreditation, EMTs and paramedics are trained to the highest standards, which translates into improved patient outcomes. The accreditation process emphasises evidence-based practices, ensuring that EMS professionals are equipped with the most current and effective techniques.
  5. Compliance with International Guidelines: NAEMT accreditation ensures that training programs align with internationally recognised guidelines, such as those from the American Heart Association (AHA) and other leading health organisations, further enhancing the quality of EMS services.
  6. Continuous Improvement: Accredited programs are subject to ongoing review and evaluation, promoting continuous improvement in the curriculum and ensuring that EMS professionals remain up-to-date with the latest medical advances and best practices.

The first class was held in June 2024 and constituted EMTs from different agencies.
